When you sit in front of a blank page and you want to write and nothing comes to you, because you’re trying to hard to be original or smart or useful or whatever else other people want you to be, then go back to this:
‘Write what you know’
I have heard this in a writing workshop a few years ago and it’s been my north star ever since.
What you know in this moment can change again tomorrow. Write it anyway. Truth is always momentary, it can change in the matter of minutes sometimes. Decades, months, weeks or days.
Of course it takes a lot of vulnerability to write like that. It takes letting down your guard, making yourself a target, risking being misunderstood or frowned at.
but it’s the truest place to write from. The in-between. The middle. The mess. Not when you’re over it - but right there, when you are in the trenches.
When you are in your feelings, WRITE.
When you are angry WRITE.
When you feel excited WRITE.
Write down what your inner world is like in that exact moment, if not for anyone else - write for yourself.
Write from a life’s low or high.
Write about how the best thing you can do for yourself is take your time.
Write about how it feels to look in the mirror.
Write about how you want to close your heart and not open it again.
Write about your fear.
Write about your regrets.
Write about the way love nestled into your heart.
Write about the song that came on and brought too many memories
Write about the thing you thought was true and how it changed
When you write what you know now, it’s powerful because it’s raw. What spills out in moments of rawness is magical. It’s unfiltered truth. Truth has power. Nobody else needs to see it. But truth can change your own life - and if it can change yours, it has the power to change someone else’s too.
You can share the unedited version with people or not.
You can edit it down to something more polished if you want.
But always always write what you know at any given moment.
What do you know now?
If you like what you read, it would mean the world to me if you could share my writing with the people you love x

“Truth is always momentary.” Never though of it like that before because I often try to make it make sense (in one way or one truth) but oh wow, how deeply your words resonate within!
