I've always been fascinated by the moment before a life-changing moment.
Like just before you meet someone that is going to change the trajectory of your life. Or just before what you worked and hoped for, materialises.
When you step out in the morning and get on the train with a sea of strangers, thinking about what to make for dinner; you put on your shoes, go for a walk and have that morning coffee from your favourite place like you do every day; you start work and maybe you daydream or you text a friend and scroll through your phone; you wipe that stain from your kitchen counter, put on the laundry as if it's just a normal day. Maybe you step out of your regular schedule. Maybe you take a different route to the grocery store. And instead of going to the 9 am class you take the 3 pm class. Maybe you go out instead of staying in; maybe your bus is late and your journey is longer; maybe you choose to eat somewhere you don’t normally like; just one small change. Unremarkable. Annoying maybe. Or convenient. You don’t even think about it.
You go about your day without the slightest idea that this day is different from all the previous days of your life. There's no announcement and no warning. That big thing might happen in a very quiet way and it might go unnoticed at first. Maybe you can sense that this is important right there and then; maybe you will discover it down the road.
But suddenly you turn a corner, you open that email, you look up, you get that call, you see that person, you walk into a room, you take heart - and in a split second something shifts. From now on, life will be different.
And just a moment ago you had no idea. I find this magic hauntingly beautiful.
The moment before a moment.
Imagine if you woke up that day and you knew. Imagine the glow in your chest, the tingle, the delight.
Imagine waking up every day with that expectation, that knowing. That you’re always living inside a moment before a moment.
I am going to trial two letters a week. One story/thought piece and one poetry piece. A moment of magic and romance. What do you think?
Beautiful. The potential unawareness of every day.
Love this one so much 🌹 I often think about how we’re more all creatures of routine than we like to think and yet all it takes is that one tiny diversion 💫
