How to replace Jesus.
I have written about my deconstruction of Christianity a lot on Instagram and spoke about it on my podcast. You can listen to Episode 8 if you want the down low.
There are a lot of people from my life ‘before’ who have asked me, ‘what I am’ now, what I call myself, if I believe in anything or why I share astrology memes.
Last year I wrote a piece about my suspicion of people who call themselves ‘spiritual’, that resonated with many of you.
There is the assumption that when you leave one belief, when you deconstruct, you have to re-construct, you have to find something else to believe in - or, if you were not brought up in an institutional faith, something will have to be your god. The assumption that humans have a void, something that needs to be filled and can only be filled by the divine.
It seems natural to go from one belief to another. Almost like leaving a long relationship and marriage, maybe some people will feel the need to explore, experiment and try all the things they’ve never done before.
I know many people who left one faith and settled into a different one.
A few weeks ago I posted an astrology meme on Instagram and received a couple of messages from Christians (there is no love like christian hate) similar to this one:
Once upon a time I was the person who messaged me. I thought the same things and spoke the same words.
I won’t even get into the christian superiority complex in this message, calling christianity ‘the truth’ as a matter of fact - but I will speak about the ‘after’. What now? What about ‘the void’? What have I replaced Jesus with? And most importantly, did I fall for astrology? :)
