That earth-shattering pain and overwhelming joy can knock on your door together, sometimes in the same afternoon.
That people you love give you bitter medicine.
That you have the ability to see the gift in that.
That when you are alone, you are not lonely.
That strangers smile at each other in public, when they’re both witnessing the same amusing scene. **
That you can laugh so hard, you pee yourself a little.
And howl in pain so deep, you think your body is breaking.
That you find power in moments you thought you would not survive.
That you experience beauty too big for words.
That love can be gentle and terrifying.
That truth grows courage and courage grows truth.
That unspeakable excitement lives next to soul-crushing sorrow in your body. That this is how you know you are healing.
That freedom sometimes can feel like loneliness.
That the ones you thought would stay have left.
That you survived their departure.
That you can save yourself and still need to ask for help.
That you see joy find its way out of peoples eyes.
That the beat of rain feels like peace and sunshine is screaming too loudly. ***
That you loose everything and you can start again.
That the darkness in your story is someone else’s medicine.
That not everything makes sense.
That without rain we would never have rainbows.
That building something takes a long time and tearing it down happens in the blink of an eye.
That if you pay attention, beauty is in the least obvious places.****
That one can be a villain and a hero.
And pretty flowers can carry venom.
That the words caught in your throat are your freedom song.
That speaking the truth can cost you your desire.
That self-delusion can save you or kill you and sometimes those are the same.
That what you don’t want can be what you need the most.
That the difference between a flower and a weed is judgment. *****
That you can be brave and scared.
That you have to get lost to find your way home.
That the fullness of life is in the tension between terror and beauty.

* I have these words of his framed in my house: Only the paradox comes close to comprehending the fullness of life
** like, I don’t know, watching two pigeons have sex in public. Based on true events.
